Hail FAQ

Where is it hailing in the US right now?

In the last 7 days StormyLeads detected 1,689 hail events across the US, and 8,009 in the last 30 days. The live map and "biggest recent storms" list above show exactly where, updated about every 15 minutes from NOAA storm reports.

When does hail season start in the US?

US hail season runs roughly March through June and peaks in May. In our data, May is the single busiest month, followed by June and April — about 80% of significant hail falls in those three months. The northern Plains (the Dakotas, Minnesota) peak slightly later, into July.

Which US states get the most hail?

Over the last 12 months the most hail-active states were Texas (3,426), Kansas (2,294), Nebraska (1,503), Missouri (1,429), Oklahoma (1,386). Texas and the Great Plains "hail alley" lead every year.

How is hail damage severity measured?

Hail is measured by peak stone diameter in inches — 1" (quarter-size) is the damage threshold; 2"+ routinely dents vehicles and damages roofs. StormyLeads also assigns each storm a 0–100 Work Score and a dollar repair-market value. See our methodology for how.
